Know Your Rights: Empowering Haitian Immigrants to Navigate Legal Rights and Resilience
"Beyond the Fear of Deportation: Empowering Haitian Immigrants in the Trump Era"
On December 13, 2024, the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston became a hub of empowerment for over 500 Haitian immigrants. This workshop, a collective effort spearheaded by IFSI-USA, the City of Boston, Roxbury Community College, TAG, MIRA, and Equity Now and Beyond, was aimed at fortifying the Haitian community’s grasp of their legal rights amidst the challenges of the Trump administration. Dr. Carlot Celestin delivered critical education on managing fear and equipped participants with robust strategies to handle their anxieties effectively.
Attendees received essential resources, including flyers and "KONNEN DWA W" (Know Your Rights) cards, designed to aid in daily encounters and potential confrontations with ICE. Expert advice was dispensed by a panel of seasoned community leaders, government officials, immigration lawyers, and psychologists, highlighting fundamental rights such as the right to remain silent and the critical need for legal consultation before signing any documents.
This powerful initiative not only armed participants with the necessary tools to navigate these uncertain times but also cemented a sense of unity and resilience within Boston’s immigrant community, marking a standout moment of collective empowerment and solidarity.
